Advertising: Key conventions

Part 1: Skittles advert analysis 1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find, and what are each convention's connotations or deeper meanings? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this. Picture - The picture of Skittles is scattered and laid out to be a rainbow which creates a brand ethos of positivity and joy. The use of the producers placing the product packaging in the middle helps us associate the brand with joy and excitement. Logo - The logo is placed in the centre with colours surrounding it. It allows us to think about the diverse flavours they offer. Background - The background is in the sky and has a rainbow made of Skittles. This gives the audience a connotation that the product is not just sweet but comparable to something natural, that it's an experience to enjoy and that it will make you feel that you're above. Denotation and Connotation

ADVERT ONE In this advert, the producer wants to show a body language code with the boy who looks sad and almost emotionless. This conveys to us that the quote in the advert shows that it's usual and there should be a change. Another body language code is that he's staring into the camera lenses which tells us he's asking the consumer to feel pity or maybe donate which is this company's goal. The quote "Dig toilets Not graves" also urges the audience that if they can help they can make an impact on where the donations are going. The quote is also a big contrast to our society as toilets and graves do not link together however the quote makes us wonder are more fortunate than we think which again urges the audience to help. The setting for example the hut shows that these may be places in a less developed country than where these adverts are shown. 1) What year was the advert produced? This OMO advert was produced in 1955. 2) How were women represented in most adverts in the 1950s? Add as much detail to this answer as you can as these are the social, cultural and historical contexts we will need to write about in the exam. During the 1950s women were represented as being extremely feminine and submissive, They were also seen to be petite and slim with perfect hair and makeup. This was seen in adverts like cleaning & cooking products which is unrealistic and tells us during this era women had to look good no matter what and preasured.
