Introduction - Tatler Media pack

1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?

The editor introduces the magazine by describing who the target audience is and describes what the target audience likes and does to show that this magazine includes everything they like in the magazine: shopping, elegance and class.

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), and % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?

AVERAGE AGE - 41

GENDER - 73% Female, 27% Male

ABC1 - 83%

HHI - £261,572

% OF THOSE LIVING IN LONDON / SE - 70%

These demographics suggest that most average Tatler readers are rich as London and South East England are known for their wealth and class. The fact that most readers are female, we can assume that most readers are reading for fashion and glamorous fashion. 

3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?

They spend quite a lot of money on designer outfits showcased on Tatler. 

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the psychographic audience group that best fits Tatler?

The typical Tatler audience would be quite feminine, live in luxury and be more material-orientated. They would have interests in beauty, fashion and cosmetics.

 Media language

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?

Tatler uses a serif font as their logo to seem more formal and serious. It gives a brand ethos of formality and elegance. 

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?

They typically use puns in order to reward educated readers. There's also a name check to our previous prime minister in order to suggest that the audience, typically high class, would have a positive relationship with him because of his political views.

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?

The colours mainly seen in the colour scheme are pastel colours and dark green as the background. This is to give the vibe of being natural, young and established. 

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. the model, the mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)

It name-checks the model in order to allow readers to see something recognisable. The costume is seen to be elegant and is a designer ball gown with connotes power, authority and a lavish lifestyle. 

Representations

1) What celebrities or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?

They used Emma Weymouth, a black model and the first black marchioness in British history, in order to seem more modern towards more modern readers to seem more inclusive.

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?

It suggests a right-wing audience as the cover lines talk about leaving the EU but also talks about Boris Johnson with his first name suggesting a connection between the audience and him.

3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.) 

Women are represented as elegant and naturally beautiful. They are also shown to be typically more feminine and lavish. Rich people are shown as classy, on top and to have connections with higher-class people e.g prime minister.

4) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?

Women are shown as feminine and naturally gorgeous which reinforces stereotypes of females and that they should always be looking beautiful naturally. This is also emphasised with Emma Weymouth being shown posing in a natural, laid-back position.

Social and Cultural Contexts

1) What types of people are NOT featured in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')

Middle class and lower class are not featured in Tatler as it is a magazine focused on posh and upper-class people.

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain? 

It suggests that being rich in Britain can be materialistic and good quality when it comes to education. It also shows society's pressure for people's need to be perfect which is one reason Tatler does special issues on cosmetic surgery and spa breaks. 

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler? 

I think females, middle/lower class and people of colour may be offended by this cover as there is a lack of inclusivity and authenticity in how life really works in Britain.

4) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler?

People of high class and mainly royalty are typically shown in Tatler magazines.
