Mise-en-scene: Stranger Things Analsis

 Stranger Things 8 minutes -

POINT  I think the clip emphasises to the audience that the show genre is horror. COSTUME In the clip clip we can see four boys wearing old-fashioned 90s-themed clothes. This suggests to the audience that this narrative is set in the past visits in a nostalgic, ordinary setting. The producers also do this to show the different characters' personalities. For example, LIGHTING The lighting is mostly low-key however we can see flickering lights which can connote danger or tell us danger is coming soon as we see this aspect a lot, when the scientist is running from something we see flashing lights. SETTING We can see later on in the clip that it is set in a suburban area which contrasts with the lab, this is juxtaposition as it compares the norm to the "Other". PROPS Old fashion bikes are used to show youth or to tell the audience this is supposed to be old and again tell us it is set back in time. ACTORS The actors are told to act childlike to show youth to contrast the plot, this tells us to subvert expectations. The producers do this to make the audience more curious about the roles they have later on and the character's personalities. For example, we can see that the character Mike is the leader from that clip as he is seen as leading the game that they are all playing. This is so the audience to presume their future roles in the plot.

Extention - (Done for LR)

Point - I think CLAMPS used in these clips show that this genre is horror. This is shown in costume when we can see the man in a lab coat. Lab coats could connote a monster or something evil being created. However, this is contrasted with the group of boys we see. For example, the main character Mike is seen in old-fashioned. 1980s clothing. The producers do this to juxtapose the first character we see and the second one to tell the audience that something weird and unusual is happening. The producers do this again with the lighting. This is shown in the first setting with lowkey mixed with high-key lighting. We can also see lights flickering and red lights flashing. This is done to show tension and danger to illustrate that something isn't right. After the first setting, we see high-key lighting and only see flashing at the end of the scene. This is done to cause confusion to the audience. However, at the end of the scene, we see a flicker. This emphasises the original thought of the show ( horror and mystery)  to the audience and causes the audience to want to know more.
